Why I dont like the RNS 315 GPS radio phone navigation system on my 2011 TDI JSW

1. Phone cannot dial POI details screen. (Like calling to check hours of operation of the POI). The number is displayed on the details screen
it should be able to dial it. So I somehow have to try and remember a 10 digit number and press a bunch of other buttons to call and see if
the store is even open.

2. GPS zoom out is far too minimunal during route navigation. About 5 other buttons are required to push to get to the overview map
and even then its not zoomable.

3. POI during route navigation is almost useless. Why do I care about a hotel, gas station, resturant 48 miles behind me?
There should be an option to only display POI's along my route (and not 48 miles behind me). I mean really, Are you going to turn around
and drive for 48 miles (96 miles total) to get a sandwich and a drink? If the POI was a mile or two I can unserstand but they got this one
all wrong.

4.There are three different volume settings (Phone GPS Radio) and its far too much of a hassel to figure out the right one.
So when I am talking to my passenger and the GPS bitching betty comes on I hit the mute button but it only takes effect for that single
voice turn indication. There should be a seperate power button so I can select the volume device I want by pushing the volume button.
Or something really simple to that effect. As it is the volume settings for the particular device are burried in layers of menus. Or at the very
least have the steering wheel volume buttons control whatever device is active (This does not work for navigation).

5. GPS bitching betty says continue following road. Well, OK, For how long? 8 miles? 50 miles? 100? I dont like to have it just spring
the turn on me in the last mile. The next turn should ALWAYS be available or displayed and its not.

6. Sirius traffic intergration is not available for GPS navigation. Even though the broucher I got with it says that its available.

A basic $200 Navigation system does these things. For $500 I expected MUCH more from this system. So now I have to either hang a GPS from the windsheild that does what it should do or spend more money to replace the POS thats in there right now.

Very interesting. This confirms something I discovered yesterday quite by accident: the RNS-315 can play AAC files from a CD or SD Card. The VW manual lists only MP3 and WMA, but the TechniSat spec sheet lists AAC and Ogg Vorbis, too. Cool.

It also confirms that the nav data is still from Navteq, as on the 510.
My manual says AAC is acceptable...

Ah, interesting. I was looking at the CD and SD Card section on page 21, which lists support for only MP3 and WMA. Looking further, I see that MP3, WMA, AAC and Ogg Vorbis are all listed in the MEDIA IN section on page 32. Maybe the specs changed at some point and the documentation people fixed it in one place, but not the other.

Nav without Radio on?

I'm a new 2011 Jetta Sportwagen TDI owner. I cannot for the life of me figure out how to operate the Nav system (i.e., have the lady give me turn by turn directions and notifications) with the radio OFF. The power button turns on the radio. I can then push the "NAV" button to start running the Nav. My issue is that sometimes I'd like to use the Nav without having to listen to the radio. I try pushing MEDIA to see if that will switch it off of Radio, but it won't - unless of course I have my iPod plugged in and interfaced, but I don't want to listen to that either when I have the Nav on sometimes. I've read the manual but don't see how to change this. The only way I can best "fix" this is to increase the volume settings of the Nav so that it overpowers the radio when the lady makes her announcements. Basically, I cannot find a way to use the Nav without the radio. Does anyone have any tips? Thanks!

Just press the "MUTE" button. This will silence any audio sources (radio, sat, CD, iPod, SD card, etc.), but not silence navigation prompts. Mute also pauses playing the CD, iPod, or SD Card, so when you unmute it will pick up right were you left off. You can accomplish the same thing by turning the audio volume down to zero (nav prompt volume is controlled separately).

Rsn 315 nav system - phone problem?

I've recently purchased a 2011 vw caddy with a rsn 315 navigation system, i thought when buying it that it had a phone bluetooth system built in but mine doesn't?? I wasn't told when ordering it that the phone system was extra! Can i have it fitted now or do i have to fit an external bluetooth handsfree set (which i really dont want to do)!! Would appreciate any feedback. Thanks

Yes, the RNS 315 does not have a bluetooth module. That is separate. You can display the phone menus on the nav screen if you have bluetooth.

YES you can fit it now but you need a retrofit harness. The dealer might tell you it's not possible because they only sell VW parts, not aftermarket parts. Since you are in Europe, search ebay or kufatec.de for the retrofit harness. You should be able to use the 9w7 or 9wz modules.

I found this kit on ebay -http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/VW-Bluetooth-KIT-RCD-RNS-510-315-5K0035730-BT-Audio-_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQhashZitem27ba6cec04QQitemZ170631425028QQptZMotorsQ5fCarQ5fTruckQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories#ht_5186wt_1167 . Is this everything i need or do i need the harness also?
