I saw the thread regarding Black Smoke at startup. I have white smoke at startup hot or cold.
Could this be timing? I recently replaced the fuel pump.
VCD indicates the timing is 2 BTDC.
I'm also getting a MIL on the EGR (PO1403). Could these symptoms be related?
Thanks

Welcome to the forum. welcometomyturbodies

If you recently replaced the pump are you sure you timed it correctly?

As with the black smoke thread white smoke can also be caused by the glow plugs. Have you tried disconnecting the Coolant Temp sensor to force the glowplugs on for the 20 seconds see if the white smoke disappears doing that?

Even though the glow plug light goes out some diesels keep feeding the glow plugs to aid warmup and reduce white smoke.

I can't find any error code for PO1403. The EGR is

VAG Error Code: 17811
EOBD II Error Code: P1403

Fault Location:
Exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system - control difference

Possible Cause:
Basic setting not carried out.
Exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system.

Thanks for the input.
The problem appears to have been related to the old pump malfunctioning. After driving for a few 100 miles, on the new pump, the white smoke only appears occasionally on cold startups.
The P1403 code is still on, so I'll check the vac hose etc.
Thanks
