I have heard some people refer to the fuel pump in the tank, do I have this? Does it need maintenance? My car is a 2003 VW Jetta TDI.

your car does not, only 2004+ do.

This page was pretty helpful in explaining it to me.

That's right. In your car, the injection pump on the engine sucks fuel from the fuel tank.

2004+ cars use a fuel pump in the fuel tank to move fuel to the fuel filter. Look through the FAQ called 1000 answered questions and you can learn a lot in an organized way.
Cool, thanx. Where are the FAQ?
The FAQ (1000 answered questions) are at the top of the general forum

Each sub forum also has a model specific FAQ at the top.
You should note that the PD lift pump has a "sock", but it doens't really filter anything, the screen holes are so big that contaminants go to the fuel filter.
