This has been making the rounds of car fourms, the real story is that he bought lug nuts and supposedly was sent the wrong ones. They had just enough thread on them to torque to 80. But once they were stressed, the lug nuts slipped and the wheels fell off.

They jacked it up, put the stock wheels back on with some lugs, then drove it off the track. The rx7 has the suspension, exhaust, etc, tucked into the body for aero so the only serious damage was to the body.

umm that's still pretty serious damage. I don't know those cars but all of the sheet metal around the wheels was banged up. That looks like about $6-8,000 worth of body work. Most insurance companies don't cover track or autocross damage either. ouch.
