Hello, can anyone tell me the possible means of water getting into the oil in the gearbox of my GOLF TDi? It has caused 2nd gear to slip and the repairer wants to replace the whole transmission. Are there other repair options?

Bad axle seal? There should be a vent on top of the transmission (not sure) so maybe water somehow got splashed in there. It is unusual. What exactly is the problem with 2nd gear?

Its changing gear to early between 2nd and 3rd and as well as the bumpy ride until RPM catch up there is a slight crunch after gear change as well. Thanks for your initial response and water could welll have splashed in through vent (if there is one) because it was driven through a causeway with about 20cm of water for about 15-20metres.
