Good Day everyone,
I wanted to take some time to make introductions and also ask for a little help. I am new to VW ownership (just got an 08 MKV Jetta 5speed with 25K miles, on the 21st of January of 2011) but not new to German car ownership (have been an Audi owner since 98). There was a few reasons for the purchase of the Jetta.
1st- I made the mistake a while back in letting go of a secondary vehicle (I am still kicking myself in the a$$ for that decision).
2nd- the Audi needs some TLC and hopefully a TIP to 6speed conversion in the near future (Tips do not like stage III motors). I had forgotten just how much I missed rowing through the gears now after driving the Jetta for a few weeks.
3rd- Having a stageIII 2.7t Audi is a lot of fun BUT.... gas mileage is not so hot, and rumor has it we may see $5.00USD a gallon for gasoline later this year, I need something more economical since my commute is just over 26 miles one way.
4th- I trust the quality of VW and have enjoyed the way they drive and perform.

I look forward to working with all of you as I am an old gearhead and am always fiddling with something. I am just starting to play around with the Jetta and started doing some minor mods (V1, de-badgeing, tint, some Vag-Com coding changes, etc.) there is more to come as time permits.

I need to ask some help from the brain trust here. I have not had much luck with my local VW dealer and I hope you all can help. When I bought the Jetta, it only came with one key (flip remote) I realize I will most likely have to buy spare and valet keys from the VW dealer and that’s OK if that’s what I have to do. I need some help with the immobilizer and this SKC thing (and yes, I do have a Vag-Com interface). OK here is what I am trying to do. VW has an "emergency key" for the Touareg (slim plastic key) I have a very similar key for my Audi and it is INDISPENSABLE for its light weight and slim size, PERFECT for carrying in your wallet, the normal "spare" key size (for the Jetta) is WAY too big and bulky to be trying to stick in your wallet, and sitting on it on a daily basis -- no thanks. There is some question to whether the Touareg "emergency key" can be programmed/coded to work with the 08 MKV system (I could not get a straight answer out of my local VW dealer). If I have to buy an additional Jetta capable spare key in order to get the immobilizer chip and perform some surgery in order to modify the Touareg "emergency key" in order to work with my Jetta, than so be it.

I have been through the FAQs link about the various keys (http://www.myturbodiesel.com/1000q/a5/key-replacement-mk5-Jetta.htm) Can any of you help me find a way to address the immobilizer and access the SKC to get the Touareg "emergency key" to work with my 08 MKV Jetta?

Any help that can be provided would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks for your time, allowing me to ramble a bit, and have a good day.

RE: #4...lol, I don't trust quality if your definition of quality is reliability but I still drive them :)

My guess on the touareg key is NO. The reason why is because immobilizer 4 system chips can only be programmed once. There is something about the system which prevents used keys from being reprogrammed. Immo3 was the same way but immo2 keys could be reprogrammed. This is not the remote half, this is the switchblade half.

The problem with the newer keys after around 2007 is that aftermarket tools haven't caught up with them in getting the parts. IMHO, if you want the emergency key, your best bet is buy the part online cut and take to dealer for programming. I can't find the part number for it sorry.

I realize it is a relative term

but I trust a VW over any GM product any day of the week (which is sad, I used to be a GM fan, but after more than 1 vehicle and the dealers giving me a large ration of BS problems - no more).

I planned on purchasing a new Touareg "emergency key" (fresh un-programmed key from the dealer) and having it cut, the biggest concern is getting it programmed, are they compatible :dunno and the dealer has not been any help in this instance either. If not, I am willing to buy a Jetta specific key so that I can surgically remove the chip and implant it in the Touareg "emergency key" so that it will work, but IF I don't have to go to the added expense and work I would prefer not to.

Thanks, and have a good day.

OK, then yes, it should work. This is just a guess. Please post any part numbers if you do it, I don't know the part numbers for the jetta emergency key, don't even know if it came with one since I bought the car used and I don't think they do that anymore.

Look at this thread, you have to destroy the key to get the emergency chip out: http://www.myturbodiesel.com/forum/f8/audi-a4-immobilizer-issue-4631/
