By fixing the immobilizer problem. You didn't list what year you had, the procedures are different depending if you have immobilizer 2 or 3, both were fitted to mk4 golf. Take a look through the immobilizer FAQs for some more troubleshooting.

how do you reset the immobiliser activated message on a VW golf mk4?
I assume I am having the same problem, Car starts, runs for 1 second and then dies.

Prior to this the car was turning over but not starting...

could it be that I wore the battery down so much that the imobi was activated?

Not on a 1991 Golf.

If it's a newer car, yes. Try leaving the car with the ignition on for a half hour.
