Hi,

I hope anybody there can help me with my problem, I was given a car VW Golf 1997 model which does not start before a mechanic looked into it and told me that the ecu needs to be replaced, so I managed to get a second hand ECU, but I was told that I need to sync the ECU and the immo and I have no idea how to do that, I dont have the original key for the car, the key given to me was the spare key and the owner lost the original key, so Im wondering if there is anything I can do to make it start, it shows "in 00" on the dash when you turn on the ignition.

Any help will be much appreciated, I just ordered a VAGCOM and still waiting for it to be shipped.

If it's the immo it would start then cut out after 2 seconds, does the glow plug light come on? And is that the AHU engine in yours? If the glow plug doesn't come on then look in the fuse box for a relay with 109 stamped on it, it's a common no start problem.:)

Please give more details like engine like engine code. Why does the ECU need replacement? Are you sure you have an immobilizer? It should not matter if you have a spare or original key as long as it's programmed.

How do you know it just doesn't have a bad starter or ignition switch?

So where have you ordered this from if youre waiting for it to be shipped?

Location: SE20 that sounds like a South East London post code so you may as well say London, UK so as not to confuse?

Hi,

thanks for the reply, I will look at the engine code and post it here. The mechanic used a device to test the ECU, with the old ECU there were no spark on any of the plugs so he used a different ECU and the spark was there, it cranks and starts but dies after 1 sec so upon reading most of the post in here it is most probably the immo, I will check under the driver seat if there is an immo, will also check the relay that you told me, yup I'm in london sorry bout the confusion I will replace that location to avoid any more confusion. thanks

About the Vagcom I have ordered it from china so I am waiting for it to be ship. A friend of mine told me about it so I ordered one.

The immo's built into the ecu and clocks I think, never heard of any under the seats. I would check your old one isnt just wet inside and shorting out, that's what happened to mine. You could try m1ketdi on the tdiclub site, he's in Bristol and might be able to delete the immo for you or at least tell you who can.:)

So its not a TDI then and your immobilizers on?

About the Vagcom I have ordered it from china so I am waiting for it to be ship.
So your having a Chinese clone?

Whats up don't you like putting London in front of UK?

Give him a break Keith, it's an older version you get but it's totally legal, we don't all have the money to go out and buy the full kit from rosstech.

Hi,

about the immo its not lit on the dash if there is any that should be lit but I can only see the oil light lit on it.

I ordered a chinese clone because its an older version and figured that ross tech might not be selling this old stuff anymore. Its more than 10 years old.

thanks Seatman

Sorry I forgot about the year.

Yes there are plenty of VAG-COM USB KLL 409.1 cables on eBay but all from China or Hong Kong so he will be waiting for a slow boat from China?

No problem, yes I bought it from ebay that is where my friend told me to buy it, It is indeed a slow boat. about the engine code honestly I have no idea what it is and how to find it, but tinkering under the dash I found the immobilizer (VW Part Number: 1H0 953 257 BB, Siemens Part Number: 5 WK4 678), I checked the 191 relay and its working so I dont think it has something to do with the relay. It starts but quickly dies off. I will try and do more research about this car while waiting for the vagcom to arrive it will take 11 days for them to ship it to UK. I will post any update.

By the way the car runs on petrol.

Well I've just looked in Autodata for a 97 Golf and it only listed the 2.0 litre so the engine code is probably.

Volkswagen Golf/Golf Estate (91-98) 2,0 16V 1992-97 Engine code: ABF

If the spec is anything different let me know.

Have a look if there is a sticker on the passenger door jam that will show you car details. If you don't have the service schedule then have a look if there is a sticker on the boot floor near the wheel well that will show your car details along with the Options codes for that car I think the engine code is the 5th line down.

It's got a 109 relay Keith so it must be a diesel, I think he meant the glow plugs weren't getting power.

How do you know the relay is working? Does the glow plug light come on? If it does then yeh it's maybe ok.:)

Im back, thanks for the info the engine code is AEX it is under the boot like what you said. thanks for that info by the way. I have taken some pictures of the relay and the information under the boot if it helps. Thanks for helping me with this.

Sorry about the confusion with 109 relay actually I checked the 191 relay. I checked the relay by supplying power into it and then using a multi tester to check if it works.

And about the petrol thing Im not sure about that because thats what the previous owner told me.
