We just got an '04 Jetta, which only came with one remote key, and what appears to be the valet key (it will start the engine for a second, then die).

Is it possible to get a standard key like the valet key, which has the immo chip built in? I'd rather not carry the bulky remote on my keychain, as I will rarely drive the car, and don't need remote locking.

Also, I can buy new remotes and keyblanks from various places online, but from reading here on the immo 3 section, it appears I need the keycode to add a new key to the immob. system. If I understand correctly, the programming with the driver door open, etc. is only to program the remote locking, not the immob. chip. This page below seems to suggest I need to get a keycode from the dealer even if I have vag-com to do the programming?

Yes, the valet key will have the chip built in. The dealer is the easiest place to get it done. Your valet key is tripping the immobilizer.
Ok, this is good to know about the valet key. The dealer is easiest... but can I activate a key with VAG-COM?

For additional remotes and keys, it looks like keylessride.com has them. Is this a good source?

Thanks.

Need to get my SKC

Read the mk4 key FAQ for lots of details on programming the key. You can use VCDS (vag com) but you need to know the secret key code to work with the immobilizer system which vcds can't provide. Never tried keylessride but if they sell OEM parts they should be fine.
From the FAQ:
"contact someone who has tools to retrieve the SKC from the instrument cluster"

So, anyone near Victoria, BC who has these tools? Or should I just risk $25 and try the ebay vag-tacho program? A friend has VAG-COM, so I just need the SKC.

If I do end up going to the dealer, what price should I expect to pay for programming two keys?

Thanks
