The alternator that has been taken off of my 2003 turbo VW beetle is a 120 amp Valeo, after checking with parts store a Valeo cost $411.23 but a Hatashi cost $174.40. My question is this, can I use a Hatashi or does it have to be a Valeo? The parts store said they didn't see any difference in the 2 but they weren't sure if I could use the Hatashi or not. I just don't wanna get the cheaper one and it mess up the engine.

Thanks, Doris

I believe AutoZone sells rebuilt Bosch alternators... you can use those as well... (many prefer them to the Valeo, Hitachi, or no-name Chinese units that you find all over eBay...

(BTW: the voltage regulators are replaceable on the Valeo and Bosch units - although they may be difficult to find in some regions of the country, but not on the Hitachi...)
