First, the harbor freight transmission jack is awesome. It has a tilt function, castering wheels, and only cost about $80 after shipping. I once borrowed a larger transmission jack once, and the thing nearly gave me a hernia...it weighed over 100 lbs. Although I borrowed it from a farmer and I think it was for farm equipment.
In addition to tilting the trans as necessary, you can use a bolt with the head cut off and a slot cut into it. If you use two, it will guide the transmission quickly onto target. You can also use wood dowels too. I didn't need it with this car (not the VW) , but I found a pic of this bolt-alignment tool and am attaching it below.
