Transmission cracked

Clutch fried on my 06 jetta tdi mk5. Caused hairline crack in bell housing. Thinking of having it welded. The crack is small. about 3" long. and about 2 inches from the input shaft. The cost of new is out of the question, junkyards want from 1200 to 1700 for one. For 60 bucks the local weld shop said they can weld it. Any advice? I dont think the transmission itself is hurt, I think that when the friction plate wore out it slung broken piecies of the clutch arm around inside it until it cracked.
