I seem to recall reading that the top speed of a 2010 Golf TDI was speed limited to 126 MPH. Does anyone know if that is correct, and what would the top speed be if it was not speed limited?

Welcome to the forum Robert. welcometomyturbodies

I can only speak for the UK spec 2.0 TDI 140PS Golf and thats claimed 130mph. Mine is claimed 138mph.

You can download the UK Golf brochure here.

Take a look at this gearing, wheel, and tire calculator:

http://www.myturbodiesel.com/1000q/tire-wheel-gearing-calculator.htm

Manual top gear ratio is .717 w/final drive 2.76. DSG is .756/3.04. This is the same for all 2010 and 2011 Jetta/Golf/wagon TDI.

Enter those numbers in the calculator and find redline and you now have your redline speed. If the engine could go faster than redline it could probably go beyond that assuming the tires can stand it. Then again, with only 140 hp I wouldn't be surprised if around 128 was about the top speed. I had a sports coupe with 200 hp/200 torque and the top speed was around 145 mph.

I know it's not the same but I was just watching an audi a2 on youtube the other night, a 1.4 3cylinder with a simple remap and it was doing 150mph so who's getting their new golf mapped then:D

I went to the VW of American web site and saw the following:

http://www.vw.com/en/models/golf/features_and_specs.s9_trimlevel_detail.suffix.html/2011_golf~2Ftdi_2-door.html#/tab=6ed9c6952728505dc13545b5a9dad73b

Scroll down toward the bottom, and you'll see the listed electronically limited 125 MPH top speed. So I'm wondering what the top speed would be w/o the electronic limiter. Just from the seat of my pants feel when I accelerate onto the Interstate, it easily and quickly will hit 85 MPH w/o any strain, it feels like it would do 140 or 150 on the Autobann.

I've read on other forums that the GTI is limited in speed for the US but they say its the tyre rating isn't as high 'H' in the States.

I had a gps verified 152 mph out of my 1.9 pd not long ago which is good as i can still average over 50 mp on a road trip.
I shall re test that top speed early next week when i visit Germany.

Here's a top speed calculator I found: http://assassinracing.com/tech/horsepower_calc.shtml

The golf's hp is 140
cd is .304
area cd is 2.22 m2 (23.9 sq ft)
air resistance is .304 x 2.22= 0.675
weight is about 3200 lbs with a single driver.

According to the calculator, assuming those conditions in the test, you need about 150hp to go 140 mph. Tires, air temp and pressure, car and road condition can change all those.

Redline is 5000 so assuming a manual transmission, using my calculator the top speed limited by gearing is 187 mph. To go that fast you would need about 350 hp.
