Hi,

Can someone shed some light on this ssue for me please.

My golf 4 days ago started squealing like fan belt slipping, on evening knocking started then within hour a clunk and knocking stopped. Checked but couldnt see anything wrong except battery light on and not charging!

Took it to garage that does my work and they say idler pulley gone! Get a new one and they will fit it! Belt is looser and I assume is not spinning alternator hence no charge!

However pulley I bought does not seem to be missing and can not see anything that is!

Can any one point me in the direction of a photo or schematic on what the AHF belt system should look like.

Any help much appreciated..

Hi bud, the alternator pulley is usually a clutched one, if you take off the auxillary belt then jam the alternator fan part with a piece of wood and try turning the pulley, it should only turn one way otherwise it needs replaced. You can also have a look at the aux belt with the engine running and see if the tensioner is bouncing at all as that could be an issue.:)
