Ultimately it comes down to price and what you want.
I don't think I save much money on my TDI when compared to a 10 year old honda civic. I paid a premium on the TDI and although fuel economy is nice, a 10 year old Honda civic can get 35 mpg. But I don't want a Honda , I wanted a VW!
