I dont suppose there is an easy way I can find out if its an early or late without actually taking the parts off?

Well it appears they changed the tensioner in 2002 from hydraulic to manual.

As chitty has stated some parts

timing belt: either 038 109 119 P or 038 109 119 S are supplied - £51.37
tensioner roller: F >>8E-2-297 100 - 045 109 243 C - £58.17
tensioner roller: F 8E-2-297 101>> - 045 109 243 M - £63.42 also use 038 109 454 A

relay roller pulley: F >>8E-2-297 100 - 045 109 244 A - dropped on 01/12/2009 please use replacement
relay roller pulley: 045 109 244 C - £37.14

water pump:
When installing water pump 038 121 011 j/jx instead of 038 121 011 c/cx a recess my have to be made by workshop means in timing belt guard in upper area of water pump housing.

water pump with sealing ring: 06B 121 011 L - dropped on 01/01/2010 replace with
water pump with sealing ring: 06B 121 011 Q - £67.22
water pump with sealing ring: 06B 121 011 LX - £40.07
water pump with sealing ring: F >>8E-2-295 000 - 06B 121 011 CX - dropped on 01/01/2007 replace with
water pump with sealing ring: 06B 121 011 JX - £40.07
