Hello, hello, i am replacing a rear main engine oil seal on a TDI motor in a VW Caddy 2003. I have realised that there is a crank angle sensor that is part of the seal. A plastic piece holds the metal ring in a particular spot, so i assume the motor must be on TDC when replacing the seal. How do you have the motor on TDC with the flywheel off?? Is there a tool to lock the motor in the right spot?? Does anyone have any info on lining up the ring on the seal or any fitting info?? I spoke to a couple of VW specialists and they have done plenty of clutches and flywheels but no seals. Thanks for your time.

Hi there, yes that is the same seal as shown in the photo. It is the 1.9 TDI with engine code BLS. In the photo it shows the yellow plastic piece that holds the metal ring in place at a particular spot on the seal. When i install this seal, does the engine have to be on TDC?? I don't have the timing belt apart, and the flywheel is off, so how else would you line up the engine to TDC?? Am i wrong in thinking that the engine needs to be on TDC, and that i can install the seal regardless of engine position? thanks.
