This writeup is for the tdi frostheater, it is applicable for the passat but it should be helpful if installing on a jetta. The kits are different.

Bascially, it lets you get instant heat in the winter. There's no issue with warm up in the summer, but it'll take 20 minutes until the water is warmed up! The TDI has less waste heat and the passat radiator is large, 2 contributing factors to the painfully slow warm up time. Starting the engine and idling the car will warm it up a little bit but it's not a gasloine car and idling is not as effective. Also, a long idling period is not best for the engine.
