my passat estate 2004 tdi model has an issue with the the support strut on the pillar end. the strut sits on a knuckle held in place but the knuckle bolt that goes into the rear pillar has become so loose it stops the tailgate lifting properly. how do you get to the back of it to retighten or replace. ][/B]

As long as you're removing the strut, try cleaning the pivot and regreasing it too. It's possible the strut is just worn out as well.

sorry, i know how to get the strut off the knuckle, its the knuckle itsself which has become very loose. i cant tighten it at all as it does not seem to be fixed to anything in the actual pillar. i tried prising off the trim inside the boot area but still cannon get into the back of the knuckle/bolt.
