The Serpentine Belt Tensioner on my MK5 1.9 TDI Golf snapped - I suspect the Altenator clutch pulley might require replacing as well.

My questions is as follow, how does one change the potion (position of the pulley arm and mounting arm) of the tensioner to slip the holding pin in? - I have taken the tensioner off but I have read comments about releasing tension on the unit before removing the belt and I am curious as to how this is done - I have tried to do it by hand but it appears to be complete seized up. Is there a tensioning pin or screw that I am missing?

Many thanks in advance

You would normally put it into the position where the pin can slip in before you remove it from the engine. It needs quite a bit of force to overcome the spring tension. I use a large shifting spanner on the top square protrusion. You may find you will need to mount it back in the motor to do this, then remove it from the motor with the pin in place
