I read a lot of stuff in different forums about the RNS-315 in a MK5. It seems the the head-unit should work fine, but no MFSW buttons (for all MK5) and no display in the MFD (for those who have the RED MFD+, it works completely on the WHITE MFD+).
What was a no go for me at the beginning was the lack of the MFSW buttons because I like to change the volume and hang up my phone calls without leaving my eyes from the roads.
So I finally decided to buy one of them and here is what i found by myself :
On my 2009 Jetta TDI Sedan (Highline) , my MFSW is working with the RNS-315 (1K0 035 274 B) (volume +/-, phone, mute) but for now I do not have any information from the RNS-315 in my MFD+ (the RED one). So the basic functions of the RNS-315 seems to be able to cummincate with the car, even if they do not use the same protocol (BAP for the RNS-315, DDP for the MK5).
But as my Jetta is the latest real MK5 model, maybe it has some MK6 parts (CAN gateway, Steering Module, and some others)
I did not try to do any VCDS coding for now (I am waiting for my mic harness), but it seems, at least with the 2009 MK5 to be more compatible than expected by many other people.
If I am able to add some other functions from the RNS-315 to my MK5, I will let you know.
What's the build date? It's on a door jamb sticker.
It should use only mk5 electronics if it has the red MFD. Since I haven't seen this for myself, any way you can upload a short video showing the MFSW operating the rns315? If so, I'll update the rns 315 FAQ with your findings and of course, give you credit! I don't like to add things to the FAQ unless I see multiple reports or proof since your car could be a fluke.
As soon as i am in my car, i will check this out and make a video. I am just missing the mic harness and the am/fm adaptor to have bluetooth phone and radio ;-)
Thanks for the find! Article edited. and credited with your find. Your car is a mid model year build. They started making them in late 2009 and 2-09 means 2nd week of 2009, not Feb 2009. The production dates usually end around June.
Here is my VCDS report made this morning (I have errors with the RNS-315 because I do not have the antenna adapter yet (Radio and Sirius but I do not understand why I have an error for the AUX)

Another weird thing. My cluster and my RNS are time synchronized. But I can not get any information in the MFD (due to the lack of BAP protocol in it).
How is all this possible ? I do not understand. Some parts are working, other not.
The cluster sends time data to the RNS 315 to calculate ETA, etc. I wasn't even sure if it'd work because of BAP. The MFSW ability is because you have a newer control module. I think it will just not show stuff on the MFD because of BAP.
No, only 1 side, off the top of my head, the right side. Some more detailed info in the MFSW swap article. Steering wheel and airbag will otherwise work.
I have a 2009 Jetta TDI build date (2-08), I am seriously looking into installing a RNS 315 or RNS 510 in it. I am NOT concerned about displaying on the red MFD. My major concern is that the steering wheel volume, mute and phone buttons work and I want blue tooth to work (one of the main motivators for this project).
Having read this thread my questions are:
1. Did you get this to work with the original 09 Jetta steering wheel control module (you talked about put a new steering wheel control module in only your 08 Rabbit?)
2 If there is a difference in the can bus/steering module between 02-08 and 02-09 builds would I be able to get it to work with a new steering wheel control module like your 08 Rabbit?
3. My stock radio has sirius, will the current antenna just plug into it? I know I will have to disconnect the compass module!
4. Will a blue tooth module be required or will the RNS-315 or RNS-510 provide full blue tooth functionality on its own?
Can you think of anything I might not have covered?
I have a VCDS so I will be able to code any changes required, providing I get good advice.
anyone have a link to a store with a sirius antenna extension that will work to bypass the Premium 7 sat module to use a Premium 8 radio (RCD 510)? No intention to hijack thread felt it was related.
Hello,
Gonna wake up this old thread and give some extra info about this combo.
So i just installed a rns 315 in my 2008 golf variant.
I have a full MFD and steering wheel buttons.
Ofcourse nothing worked. But I had read about a PolarBT box, the box makes it possible to use a BAP bluetooth module in a MK5 with everything working. So i thought maybe that box will translate the BAP code from the RNS and make it work fully in the MK5. Short answer, it doesnt do a lot.
The left side of the steering wheel controls started working and in the MFD a Telephone page was added, but theres nothing on that page.
This is the box connected with the included loom.
And this is the telephone screen on the MFD.
So for the people researching if this would work, it sort of does...
