Note: Before someone asks, I upgraded the RCD-510 in my 2011 JSW to the RNS-315 navigation radio. Check the forum for my other posts before you assume shenanigans on my part.

I know I can't sell the old head unit without the security code, but the dealer didn't give me a card or any other paperwork with that information. I called the service department today and found out that it can be retrieved via the CAN port when the radio is installed in the car. Wish I had known that up front, but oh well...

I didn't ask for details, but I'm assuming it can be done with the VCDS cable. Has anyone here done that? I may have to break down and buy a cable.

It cannot be done with VCDS. Look on the side or back for the serial number. The dealer can look it up for you if you give them your VIN. They must do this for free. It can also be retrieved with the unit in the car or just by the serial number.

Definitely, have the dealer look it up with the serial of the head unit and the car's VIN. I had my RCD-510 replaced under warranty before I put the Pioneer in there. They actually wrote the security code on the head unit itself with a Sharpie. Seriously? How is it useful as an anti-theft feature if you put it right on the part which would be stolen?

Excellent. A load of BS from the service rep on the phone, then. :) Fortunately I'm taking the car in for a 90 day check next week, so I'll take the stereo in and have them give it to me then. At least they'll know I'm honest that way.

Thanks for all of your help! This forum is turning into a great resource for me.

Only the dealer can give you the radio code. When I bought mine I asked the dealer for the radio code they said we don't give these out as they used to because owners just leave them in the car and thieves can read. I said I bought this new car with a radio I want the radio code, its on the service database and they gave it to me.

You should never need the code unless you change radios and you want to sell your old one?

FWIW, I purchased a CPO 2010 car 2 weeks ago. The radio code was on the yellow purchase contract. The guy said it was required to be on the purchase contract. If you bought the car from a dealer, you might check the purchase contract...

Your service advisor is an idiot. All you need is a VIN from any VW 2009 or so + and the serial number etched on the side of the radio that starts with VWZ4Z7. It's 14 digits long and also on the sticker on the top. The sticker on the top is 15 digits long, just take off the last number or letter. The dealership has a logon for a VW website where they type in both the VIN and serial number and it gives them the code. I have a friend who is a service advisor and get codes all the time for the radios I sell on eBay. If the service advisor tries to charge you tell them to shove it. It takes all of 30 seconds to get the code if you have the info needed. Most will give you the code over the phone.
