If the soft touch coating on your VW Mark IV is badly scratched or peeled, remove it with Isopropyl Alcohol which can be bought for cheap at any Chemist or Drug store. Jut wet a cloth with it and start rubbing. The parts around the gear lever is removed easily. No repaint is necessary because it looks fine when cleaned. As the alcohol dulls the black surface restore with any vinyl polish to bring out the black lustre surface. Leaves no scratches. Use on door handles as well as rear astray. NEVER USE ON THE SURROUNDS ON THE AIR VENTS AS THIS HAS A WHITE LAYER UNDERNEATH.

I've found that soft touch coating comes off not just because of scratches, but because of lotions. The chemicals in certain hand lotions or sunscreens can also soften the coating and cause it to peel off.
