Hello- I have bought a 2001 Jetta with a blown motor (ran it out of oil). I'm trying to find a properly remanufactured A4 ALH-code longblock. ZSImports in Nevada has 4; will sell me one for $2500 with no core charge, but there are some horror stories online about these guys. And there is GEX; I'm told they use Brazilian and or Mexican parts. They want $3000 plus a $1000 core charge.
Has anyone out there had to buy a rebuilt TDI engine? Who from? Recommendations?
Thank you!

Rebuilding a 2001 TDI

I am a trusted mechanic on the tdi club and I have built many engines. You can also email me [email protected]
Hello mtbr244-
Just a little history on me: I have worked with diesels for many years. Mostly with farm vehicles, but the last 8 years I had a MBZ 300TD that I put a WVO kit on. Loved running on free fuel, hated all the maintenance the old Mercedes required. So I'm quite familiar with wrenching, and how to fix some diesels. The VW TDI (especially the A4 type ones) seems like the best motor going for passenger use, and for a WVO application, hence my recent purchase. It's also a beautiful car!
I am still on the fence about whom to buy an LB from. Yet I am just going on the former owners word that the engine is "blown up". Since it sounded like either the timing belt broke or it was run out of oil, it only makes sense to me to go for a longblock, and do it right.
Can you tell me where you would buy one from, and what you'd expect one to cost?
I can send a private message if you prefer.
Thanks!
