My 01 jetta has started making a rattling noise , maybe from the transmission, had it checked and the mechanic said everything was fine. No codes except for the #2 glow plug and an error for the MAF sensor. Could a malfuctioning MAF cause this? Also shutters and stalls from time to time when I first put it into reverse(auto). No slipping, runs strong.

Not the MAF. It could be a loose exhaust hanger.

Shuttering and stalling on an automatic transmission is not a good sign. These transmissions aren't known for longevity.

The rattling could be from an interior trim piece or maybe a loose anti-roll bar or suspension piece. Does it change when going over bumps or is it there even at idle?

The noise is present while at idle but disappears when the engine is under power or you give it gas. The issue of the car dying when I put it in reverse is even more present and also in drive when the vehicle is first started but after it "warms" up the rattle at low speed or idle is the only issue. Could this be a bad torque converter or silenoid?
