Hello again guys and thanks for all the help so far.
Was out topping up the oil in my 1999 Passat (which I only own a few weeks) and noticed a big puddle of water under the hood beside the battery and brake fluid reservoir. Surely this can't be normal! It has been parked up for a week until I sort out tax and registration and there has been a few days of rain.
Here are 2 photo's I have taken to show you what I mean...

You can see the dark black where the water is. It is right the way across that top part of the engine, even over where the battery is.
Is this normal, please help!

Thanks guys. As soon as I removed the negative terminal from the battery the alarm went off, didn't know how to disconnect the alarm so re-connected battery. Was able to remove all water tho using a foot pump for an inflatable bed lol. So its off to the pub for a few pints and i'll get my mechanic friend to remove battery tomorrow and clear the hole.
