I'd like to start by saying that this forum and all of the information I've read so far is awesome! I'm a veteran VW owner and I purchased my first TDI in 2004. Jetta Wagon. It ran great with no problems until 2009 when I first started experiencing issues with intermittent power loss and it seemed worse when shifting from 2nd to 3rd and from 3rd to 4th gear. I haven't reviewed all of the information on the site yet but I'm confident the answer to my problem is in here. I've heard it could be the EGR cooler, vacuum hose, clogged filters, etc., so I'd appreciate anything anyone can offer up in terms of which makes sense to replace, troubleshoot first. Thanks!

Oh, what a problem you've got! You didn't learn the less after your previous VWs :)

Take a look at the new owner's checklist for mk4 and the limp mode article. It's organized as a linked checklist with most common issues listed first to help troubleshoot these problems. It could be any of those so without testing some things first, it's pointless to suggest what to replace first.

ahhhhh you too !!!!

Hello ,

I'm having the same issue , My Jetta 2000 140 000 Km i can't push it in 4 and 5 gear , in 4 gear can't do much than 100.0 km/h and in 5 gear 110.0 km/h , Yesterday the check engine light came on..... Code is P1557 which is: P1557 Charge Pressure Positive Deviation.

Possible issues are:

a problem with the N75 solanoid

the intake maybe clogged

the variable pitch vanes sticking

hoses that link the various valves and turbo actuator

The MAF could be an issue , there is a small screen in the right front fender ( about 3" diameter ) , that's where the air filter takes his cool air , it's often clog so no cool air is going in and the heat burns the cell of the MAF , normally at every oil change i clean it.

Diesel additive also would help.

I'll keep you posted.......

Even if the snow screen is clogged, there's a bypass. It's not the warmer air that's burning the MAF, it's bad air filters and weak MAFs. It sounds like you're on the right track but have to test some more things to narrow it down.
