Passat TDi: indicator 'click' run-on and air in fuel pipes on start-up

I have two residual problems with my 2001 Passat 1.9TDi.

First, after cancelling the direction indicators or hazard indicators (both of which work fine) the audible click, which I assume is symthesised, carries on for up to 20s afterwards in a random and disjointed manner at a variable frequency but without the indicators actually flashing. It's an annoyance rather than critical, but I'd very much like to solve it. Any ideas please?

Second when I turn on the ignition, there is a momentary sound of what I assume to be the fuel lift pump charging the system but, for the first second, it sounds like there is air in the pipes as it makes a squirting kind of noise. Is this indicative of a problem or potential failure?

Thanks!

Does this describe your problem? http://www.myturbodiesel.com/1000q/b5/clicking-turn-signal-relay-repair-vw.htm

The fuel pump noise is probably an air bubble moving through the lines. Maybe the fuel lines had a leaking spot?

Bingo on both counts ;)
Thanks again guys!

I took the hazard switch apart - no fault apparent - but gave it all a good clean and treated the sliding surfaces with Nyogel 760: electrical contact grease, highly recommended. However it made no difference. Belatedly seeing your article on the subject I then blasted the root of the ind. stalk with canned air which gave a momentary improvement but this was not sustained. So the next task is to take the steering wheel off and do the job properly!

Asides, I have also noted that the horn press is difficult to operate: only a firm press near the centre causes it to operate. Pressing at the edges (whilst keeping your hands on the wheel) does nothing. Might this also be due to contamination, or are their other issues affecting this?

Thanks!
After removing the airbag, take a look at the horn underneath. Around the same time of the turn signal problem, the car had a problem where the horn would softly make a few random beeps. A blast of air behind the airbag fixed it.
