I haven't owned a car since 1995, and I just bought a Jetta TDI LE. I am glad that I found this site. I have learned several things already. Just filled up for the first time last night, and was a little disappionted with the initial mileage. My dealer and reserach tells me that this will get better as the engine breaks in. I do mostly interstate driving and I am hoping to average at least 40 mpg.

Welcome! Yes, if engine can get 10% better fuel economy after engine break in, that 10% is much more noticeable if the overall mpg is greater. For example, if you are getting 40 vs. 20 mpg average an increase to 44 mpg is more noticeable vs. 22 mpg.

Take a look in the FAQ at the buying guide/new owner checklist for some other interesting stuff to know that isn't in the owner's manual.
