I am looking at buying an 06 TDI from a lady with 50,000 miles. Not being a TDI guy, but have droveVW's for a while, I know about some of the problems with TDI's just being on different forums. I asked her about oil changes and she gave me the "well we used Valvoline". Now, I know she has a small garage mechanic who probably has no clue about 505 01 specs so I would assume this is 5w-30 syn motor oil. She said they changed it every 7000 miles except for the first one and it was done by VW. For you experts out there, would you be concerned about cam/lifter wear at this mileage and with the information I've given you?

I just don't have a good feel on the failure rates. The more I read the more it appears oil is not the complete cause of the failure since it happens on cars which only used the the VW spec oil. I appreciate the feed back and feel more comfortable with the car. I think I'll use the oil as a possible bargaining chip.
