Have purchased 2011 Golf. Not understanding why Castrol Edge 5w/40 Turbodiesel would not be preferable to Castrol 5w/40, non-specified. TD Edge appears from web articles to be more applicable to older pumpe duse engines. Manual is little help as it specifies only Spec 507 synthetics. When asked the same question the service manager could not answer. Not exactly a confidence builder in VW technician training. Thanks for any help on this. I will also call Castrol.

Post moved to mk6 forum since really specific to that.

Not sure the specs on that oil but 507 oil is very low ash. The DPF filter slowly clogs up with particulates and self cleans by running a DPF regeneration cycle. However, things like metals from motor oil and wear cannot be cleaned out so they very slowly build up. Once filter is clogged, you have to remove and clean it or replace. Here is more on the system: http://www.myturbodiesel.com/1000q/DPF-Adblue-FAQ-VW-Audi.htm
