While it's best to buy a replacement gear driven module, here are instructions to install the module. The timing procedure is the same if you have gears or chains - do it at TDC and there's a special tool that fits in the back. http://www.myturbodiesel.com/1000q/b5/oil-pump-passat-tdi-replacement.htm
Hi, I own a 2005 Audi A4 2.0 TDI, engine code BLB. milleage on it is 140k.
My mechanic advised me to change the Oil pump, due to a metalic noise we cannot detect exactly.
Do you think I should do this proactively?
The replacement labour is very time consuming, 2-3 days.
Also complicated, so I am afraid they will screw smth else in the process..
many thx

2 days is reasonable, pros who have done the job many times can do it in 1 day. If your mechanic is saying 3 days, that seems way too long. Get a quote.

YES, if you already have the metallic noise it's possible the chain tension has already been lost and is grinding. The 2005 2.0L engines have the common problem.

If the pump is on its way out already, not doing it will require a new engine out of your pocket so if they screw it up at least the responsibility of replacement is on them.
