The dealer is usually wrong on most stuff. They spread bad info not out of only ignorance but also laziness. Friends at least mean well but info changes and they may be saying old info.

In any case, I suggest listening to your owner's manual. This is the only official maintenance schedule that is available to the customer. You don't need a 1000 mile oil change. The manual says 10,000 miles for the first change. Diesel engine oil is designed to hold soot and the additives need time to be released.

Most importantly, make sure they use VW 507 spec oil. This is the only engine oil certified to be used in your engine. It doesn't matter if other oils could work, if you have a warranty problem you have to show that it's not caused by improper oil. Some dealers don't want to stock it because it costs extra or because they're lazy. Some tech will just reach for the closest bottle because it's there. Who cares if they take offense, it's your car.
