I just took delivery of my third TDI, a 2009 Jetta sportwagen. A friend with extensive VW & diesel experience says I should change the oil at the first 1000 miles, which the car is just under. I called the dealer to make an appointment and they said not to. Any opinions or factual knowledege would be appreciated.

Thanks, but I'm still a bit confused....

I truly appreciate your replies....I might not have been clear about the fact that this is a brand new car...and just turned 1015 miles today.

So, when ChittyChitty says, "Changing oil would be a good idea if your car had a brand new engine," then I SHOULD call the Dealer and insist on an oil change now or wait till 5,000 miles or wait till the "recommended" 10,000 mile change?

Waiting till 10,000 seems irresponsible to me...but then who has done any independent research on this?

On the other hand, Vent5 says, "the additives need time to be released," and that makes sense to me--so I should wait?

I don't have any problem being a "difficult customer," and being powerful with the dealer, but it would be helpful to get clear advice because my friend, who is extremely knowledgeable about VWs and diesels, may not be talking to me for a while if I don't do this oil change now. He already ran a guilt trip on me about caring for my dogs, but not caring for my car before he hung up on me! But don't worry, we've been pals for 20 years and our friends say we argue like we're married....

Thanks!!

Thank you to everyone who's replied. Everything you all said was helpful and it's nice that I can save some money, too. Even though this is my third TDI, I know where to come for questions from here on out! Christine
