I doubt it will happen for a number of reasons, the main one being there weren't very many mk4 VW Passat TDI sold in North America. While lots of engines in Europe including similar Audi 2.0L engines will also have this problem or have had this problem, it looks like this Toyota recall affects many more cars. More common are worn camshaft lobes on PD (pumpe duse) engine cars. Lastly, lots of cars have stupid stuff that commonly fails due to a design flaw. It just never makes the news. Thanks for mentioning it though and I do hope there is a recall because I've also spent $$$ to fix my VWs.
