Old 70's hot rod guy here, just pick up 2005 Passat with BHW. 107K miles. T belt never changed, not driving it until done. I will probably do it my self. I have some general experience including a few chains and belts. I have review the balance shaft issue. It pull out any joy I had in my purchase of the Passat. I don't hear anything that concerns me but I am untrained on the sound.

Question: What are the odds of driving until indications of a problem? Sever vw tects and one master tect and vw service guys acts like it's no big deal. I do understand a failure will be a very big deal.

It's no big deal unless it breaks. If the oil pump fails gradually you'll have low oil pressure for a while before the warning light comes on. If it fails suddenly it could even break the timing belt from what I've read.

Nobody can say what YOUR odds are since every car is different. But generally speaking, as the car gets more miles the likelihood of it breaking is greater. IMHO, it's best to do it with the timing belt at 100k miles. Eat the bitter pill and move on and you'll have a pretty reliable car. Have it break and you're looking at around $4000-8000 repair to put in a used engine or repair any damage and put in the new module anyways. FYI, I rent the special tools upon request if you want to DIY.

The vendors linked to through the writeups sell quality parts.

Yes, all B5 Passat are 4th generation VWs. They share many parts with other 4th gen VWs. They only sold the 4th gen Passat durin 05-06 so all are B5.5 which share some parts with 5th gen VWs, some with 4th gen. Basically, the B5.5 was a cosmetic and chassis revision.

PM answered as well.
