2003 Golf, 4DR, 5speed, ALH/MK4/1.9L TDi, no mods, other than body pan, and heater.
Moument, Colorado. (7352 ft)

i've a VAG-COM, generic tools, and little or no specialized tools (yet)
a garage that stays relatively warm in winter. and not much spare time.

I'm in, b/c I lost a timing-belt tensioner recently, and I wanted to
read up on checking cam/crank timing ....

if the tensioner had a problem the first thing to do is to use the timing belt to put the engine to TDC (assuming it's still on) and make sure the marks match up.
