on my '98 there are two round panels that pop out of the molding back there. under each panel is a knob that you turn (righty tighty left loosey) to loosen a spring type mechanism that holds the light fixture in place. then the sometimes tough part... the light can be challenging to pull out. I use a standard screw driver and pry it out, but be careful because you can scratch the paint very easy... sometimes it comes out easy just by prying with my fingers.

the turn signal bulb just twists out.

why does it seem like American cars can go their whole life without replacing all the bulbs, but a vw will burn a lot of them out yearly or almost monthly???
:bangshead

I guess it could always be worse right?

Insead of prying it out with a screwdriver try using a toilet plunger to pull out the lens. I put tire lube gell on the surface to make the suction stronger and it no chance of scratching the paint.
