Here is a list of changes and differences on the 2012 VW Jetta TDI, 2012 VW Golf TDI, and 2012 VW Jetta Sporwagen TDI / Golf wagon TDI.

First, the only material changes are the addition of LED daytime running lights to the Golf if equipped with the xenon HID (see more in this thread:http://www.myturbodiesel.com/forum/f19/2011-golf-tdi-hid-drl-led-2012-retrofit-7124/), the addition of HD radio to the premium 8 RCD 510 head unit, and the addition of Fender premium stereo system on the Jetta.

The rest of the changes are a shuffling around of the trim-options packages. Here's a list from ipinch's blog askavwsalesguy

Golf:

  • Elimination of ALL current Packages and Stand Alone Options
  • Creation of three 2.0L TDIne trims (base, Sunroof and Nav, S&N with tech)
  • 2.0L Golf TDI New 17â€￾ Salamanca alloy wheels
  • LED DRLs with xenons on TDI tech
At this time I don't know if they will still offer dynaudio, my guess is that it will be included on sunroof/nav with tech.

Jetta

  • Creation of S w/ sunroof trim
  • Creation of TDI base and TDI w/ Premium trim
  • Deletion of SEL w/ Sunroof trim
  • Deletion of SEL w/ Sport Package trim (replaced by GLI)
  • iTunes® Tagging & HD Radio on premium 8 radio and RNS315 (new MDI cable)
  • Fender® Premium sound system on SEL
  • Sunroof standard on SEL
  • TDI premium adds power tilt & sliding sunroof, Premium VIII touch-screen radio w/ Fender® premium audio w/ subwoofer
Jetta SW

  • Creation of TDI® w/ sunroof trim
  • Creation of TDI® w/ Sunroof & Nav. trim

Changes for Canada:

Highline now has climatronic vs. climatic. This is dual zone auto climate control instead of the temperature knobs. I find this totally bizarre since climatronic is not available on US Golf. Then again, neither is leather. Highline also has 17" Porto wheels standard instead of 16" wheels.

I don't know if there are any changes for the trendline but I didn't see any.

Changes on the 2012 Jetta TDI

Material changes are the addition of HD radio w/tagging to the RCD510 and the option of Fender premium radio system. It adds a subwoofer in the trunk and I'm guessing an amp.

The packages are now:

Base:
center armrest, rear armrest passthrough, cold weather pack (heated front seats, windshield nozzles, side view mirrors, v-tex leatherette interior, leather steering wheel, shifter, and parking brake lever, 4-wheel disc brakes, 16” Mambo alloy wheels w/ all-season tires, trip computer

Premium:
adds: power tilt & sliding sunroof, Fender system w/ subwoofer

Navigation:
adds premium and chrome front grill & window trim, driver seat manual lumbar, RNS 315 touch-screen navigation w/ SD memory card reader, KESSY keyless access w/ push-button start

Differences between 2011 sedan and wagon

All,
Dammm it! I was looking at an 2011 sportwagon and it comes with the nice 17inch wheels and different head lights. Must be that they are throwing some mid model year changes on them already. With the panoramic moonroof and those options I likely would have gone that way if I had seen that before I bought mine.
Four months old and I already want a new one.

Thank you for SUCH wonderful information!!

I have a question about the 12 JSW, if you don't mind.

I'm trying to find an 11 JSW manual with black interior, without sunroof, BUT with the rear lower side airbag option. Seems they are few and far between. So, I'm thinking I may order a 12.

Have been on the phone with a TDIClub recommended salesman in Pennsylvania. He is researching further, but so far, seems to think that the lower rear side airbags will not be on the JSW in 12. Seems they are not listed in standard safety features, but nor are they listed as an option.:confused::confused:

Any word or idea on this? Additionally, if they are NOT available on the 2012, do you know why they have been deleted? I can think of various reasons... Minimal safety improvement? Proved to be dangerous? Low consumer interest? Cost prohibitive?

I'm ready to buy/order asap, but can't seem to figure out what to do.

Thanks in advance for ANY insight. Oh, one last thought, any info on safety of the passengers compared with and without these optional bags?

I can most assuredly say that they have not been proved to be dangerous. If that were the case, the lawsuits would have already been flying all over the place with a recall. There may have just been low interest but to be honest, the factory builds most cars in a certain configuration. If they had built them with that option, most people would have just bought them like that.

As an update on rear side airbags, I just spoke to VWChat, customer care.

They replied:
Thank you for waiting. The side curtain airbag, which extends along the side front and rear windows, is a standard feature for the 2012 Jetta SportWagen. Rear passenger side thorax airbags are optional though.

Jetta SW

  • Creation of SE w/ sunroof trim
  • DELETE All packages & stand alone options
  • Creation of TDI® w/ sunroof trim
  • Creation of TDI® w/ Sunroof & Nav. trim
  • Media Device Interface (MDI) w/ iPod® cable,iTunes® tagging and HD radio standard on SE and TDI
 Perhaps I am not the brightest, Chitty....but I'm confused.
When you say, "DELETE all packages and stand alone options," what does that mean exactly?

Here's my situation: I want to purchase a Candy White JSW with manual trans, black interior, rear side airbags, no sunroof and an ipod dock plug-in.
---I've found a local 2011 JSW in Tempest Blue with no ipod dock that meets all other criteria. I could go put a deposit on this Thursday. (and add dealer ipod hook-up for nearly $400.) Or....
---I can order a car, exactly like I want it. But, I'm worried that the unknown 2012 details will not have what I want. I'm also very confused about when I can place the order and when I can expect to get my new car. Additionally, if the price was right, I would kill for nav without sunroof.

Can you advise me on this, chittychittybangbang? I greatly appreciate any clarification, advice or thoughts you may have on it.

If it's just the iPod dock you're worried about, I'll trade you. I've got the iPod dock on mine but am no longer using it since I put an aftermarket stereo in the car. I'd honestly rather have the extra space in the center console anyway.

Delete packages means that the packages for 2011 are no more, here are the new packages for 2012. It's all pretty much the same though. The 2012 should start coming late august-sep. That doesn't mean you'll get your car then, it's just when the next model years start getting delivered.

You have a black interior, ToeBall? We might want to work something out! I'd kill for that console! I wonder if the wiring is already down there so it's a straight parts trade.

Okay. I understand that. It makes sense now. :) Thank you for clarifying it.

That picture is an early photoshop from last year and is not what the 2012 will look like, 100% sure. The 2012 and most likely the 2013 will continue to use the current body style since the car is known in the rest of the world as a Golf. The 2013 or 2014 Golf hatchback will be all new for Europe and they might change things then.
