is it possible to replace the fuel filter without having the VCDS to fill it back up again?

Can you not prime it just by going to the ACC position on and off a couple times? Still new to diesel, so I'm used to doing a lot of things like I did on my friend's GTI

Turning the ignition on only operates the fuel pump in the tank for a second or two. That will be a very slow process when changing a fuel filter.

^ right, but if you pre-fill the reservoir/filter this is usually enough. It worked for me without VCDS.
