The biggest problem is that this engine is new. TDI is totally new to Audi dealers in the US. Since each dealership is independently owned and operated, service quality is all over the place. The warnings that I wrote are because dealer service is hit or miss. Sometimes they'll get it right, other times they get it wrong. You only hear about the times they get it wrong. And a frequent poster over there and a true TDI guru used to work at a VW dealership. So while not all dealers are evil, my intent is to caution owners to closely supervise and double check what service the dealer is going. This goes for any car, not just TDIs.
One problem is that dealers are just putting any oil into the new TDI 2.0L common rail engines instead of the correct 507.00 VW spec oil. Again, your experience may vary!
The reason I don't mirror that list is because unlike most of the content on this website which comes from multiple sources, the origin of the list is solely tdiclub. Second, I worked on a car that came from a "trusted mechanic" on that list and there was a problem that caused a CEL (so I couldn't register it in my state until it was fixed) and the car wasn't running correctly. I know they work on VWs but the problem which caused the CEL is a very well known problem specific to TDIs. I don't want to disclose the shop because I believe it was an honest oversight because of ignorance and not malicious negligence.
So just like dealer service, I've found that the shops on that list are hit or miss. Individuals or shops are included or excluded on that list by recommendation and for better or worse, that's the best way to do it.
