Just found out from my VW Service Manager that he checked with VW Tech Support for update software for the new retrofit MDI I had installed. Apparently an update exists, HOWEVER the software update does not work on the MDI retrofit model (part #5N0-057-342). The update only works on MDI's that came installed at the factory as part of the package with the RNS 315 and the sun roof! Does this mean that the retrofit MDI I installed is already updated or is it just more bad news for those of us who are trying to add in a retrofit VW MDI to work with a retrofit RNS 315 Nav unit??? The fun never stops.

Why would it be any different unless the update was for the RNS 315 system instead of the MDI? I don't know for sure though, I'm just trying to help.

The TSB # is 91-10-35 and specifically calls out 2009 - 2011 vehicles with the Factory Installed Media-In (MDI) feature. It goes on to list all of the related PR codes that a car with this system from the factory would have. The module in the screen shot is similar to mine:

Address 2E: Media Player 3 (J650) Labels: 5N0-035-342.lbl
Part No SW: 5N0 035 342 B HW: 5N0 035 342 B
Component: SG EXT.PLAYER H13 0084
Revision: A1001003 Serial number: 7667440739
Coding: 010000
Shop #: WSC 01357 011 00200

It looks like the SWL will be 0140 (or higher) after I update mine.

Does your accessory MDI communicate to a scan tool, like VCDS (VAG-COM) or the VAS dealer tool? If so, you can scan it and get the details.
