Is this a common mod on our cars? I see the later TDIs running around with them to tighten up the suspension and get some more ground clearance.

No but I bet you could fab up something. Something to remember about suspension, the engineers designed it to work at stock height. The stock springs and struts are designed to work together as well. When you raise or lower the car, the suspension gets out of wack unless you adjust it further. IMO, raising the car reduces handling because it raises the center of gravity. If you want to tighten up the suspension, replace the struts.

I think what you meant to write was : adjust other suspension parts to return the suspension characteristics to stock, not raise it more.

It does give more more clearance if you want to install a skid plate that might be a little lower than the stock plate. The really soft shocks on the alh engine cars are also a problem.
