I bought a 2002 Jetta GLS TDI last summer. I assumed the seats were leather but I'm thinking now that they are vinyl. Any way of knowing which they are?
Thanks,
Stan

I don't think VW ever put "genuine" leather in an entry level car like the Golf, GTI or Jetta. I think the starting point was Passat or higher.

Unfortunately the "leatherette cow" is really popular on our lower end Dubs.

My 2006 Jetta w/package 2 has genuine leather :) Only the package 2 had it.

The GTI currently has leather w/autobahn package and gets different seats.

Your 2002 Golf or Jetta needed at least GLS to get leather. If it's a solid surface it's almost certainly leather. If it's perforated it is vinyl.

Here's how to tell but you probably don't want to do it - find a spare flap and try to light it on fire. Leather will smolder, vinyl will quickly shrink and burn.

If you have a auto upholstery shop near you, stop in and ask one of the old pros there.

They should be able to look at the grain of the "leather" and tell you.
