I have a VW LT28 2001 2.5 diesel panel van,It has developed an intermittent fault and has become a lazy starter.
When the fault is present the idle speed races and when driving, applying the brakes seems to affect the smooth running of the engine.
The problem has steadily got worse and i have read different articles and suspect the air mass sensor, but would appreciate any ideas or useful suggestions what it might be.
Another symptom is the power seems improved when fault shows itself, feels like turbo is not working and suddenly kicks in ?
I know next to nothing about these engines so would appreciate any help.thanks dave.

It sounds like it could be a quantity adjust problem on the injection pump (I don't know if that model uses a quantity adjuster) or a throttle problem.

At least with US models, the electronic throttle pedal can get messed up. The wiring too. These faults can cause erratic running. If your car uses an injection pump then the pump could be having some problems. It might explain the starting problem too.

I don't think the air mass sensor is the problem since when it dies you don't get flip flopping between bad and suddenly good performance. Get the car scanned for codes and see what comes up.

Goole shows it's a transporter so it does use an injection pump. The above suggestions are good places to start. Could be a bad ECu wires.

idle problem

sounds like a possibility as i moved the plug on the throttle control and it has more power but still not so good at starting like it was before problem.
I will look into getting it checked for fault codes as suggested and see what comes up,thanks guys
If anyone has any other ideas i would be grateful !

This must be a sensor problem. "power seems improved when fault shows itself, feels like turbo is not working and suddenly kicks in " No way that is a mechanical problem.
