As some of you may have read, I've been having a squealing sound from my '04 Jetta, and as of today it shuts off when I come to a stop. Im pretty sure the noise is coming from the brake booster, and it shuts off when I press the brakes hard, at least when the car is cold. My friend and I looked over it and we're pretty sure that the sound is coming from the brake booster. I would also like to add that sometimes when I get in the car the pedal is completely stiff (as if someone was pumping it with the car off, but nobody was in there). What could the problem be? Has anyone heard of this? New brake booster? Please help! I truly appreciate any insight, THANKS!!

Stiff pedal = no boost. Did you check that the vacuum line going to the brake booster is good? There could be a big leak which makes the noise. It's possible the vacuum pump, the thing on the end of the cylinder head is bad and is squealing.
