These two writeups require a VCDS. To use your foglights as DRL you must have foglights from the factory or OEM style retrofit foglight harness. This is because it's controlled from the central electric module. Many people just use an aftermarket relay harness controlled by the low beams to add foglights. Because it's controlled by a relay it won't work as DRL unless you have a euroswitch, move it to the middle position, then pull out to turn on the foglight. This isnt' DRL since it also turns on all the other lights. Also shown is how to disable the DRL and what the Scandinavian DRL is.

This is for older Jetta/Golf. I don't know about the beetle but the New 2010 Golf TDI comes standard with foglights in the US and the 2004-2005 VW Passat TDI when in GLS (a midline trim) came with foglights.
