I was playing around with the car today and took some screenshots that relate to activating the comfort window operation. This lets you open or close the windows using the remote key fob.

This is in addition to the regular way of sticking the key in the door lock and holding it locked or open to close or open the windows. The difference is that using the key also opens/closes the sunroof. Although there's a checkbox in VCDS in the CCM (convenience control module) on your Jetta, it won't work. Maybe this was for Rabbit and Golf or Passat, I don't know.

Mk4 Jetta, Golf, and New Beetle, and Passat could also do something similar but it wasn't possible to do it through VCDS or vag com. It had to be done using a special single use OBD2 flash tool or through another program that only runs off DOS.

I will edit the writeup. It doesn't work on mine and I read that it didn't work on someone else's. Good tip about the sunroof! I also added a caution about holding the button too long in the winter.

That's cool! Does it work on the new Golf?

Yes but the procedure is different for all 2010 new newer Volkswagen and Audi since they combined the central electric module and central convenience module into 1. It's now under adaptation, channel 6. Change it from 0 to 1 to activate it.

If you have an Audi A3 it adds another option in the MFD which you have to select to enable it. It was too confusing to have the instructions in the same article since they are pretty much completely different. I'll add some screenshots once I find a car to test it on. If anyone with a 2010 model wants to contribute step by step screenshots of the procedure, it will get added, thanks in advance!

Video has been added to the writeups as a demo. As you can see, I can close the sunroof using the remote but I can't open it. A 2009 wagon has reported that the sunroof function works on his so they must have changed something in later Jetta or the sportwagen (Golf wagon).

If your car has a rain sensor (you have auto wipers) on the center rear view mirror, there's also an option in VCDS to close the sunroof and windows if it detects that it's raining. The rain sensor is a big square box with sensors looking out of the car. You would know if you had one and to the best of my knowledge, only 2005.5 may have had them from the factory.

Update to the article: To enable the remote windows trick on a mk4 Jetta, Passat, Golf, or New Beetle, you have to do one of the following:

Use the DOS only program vds? or vdc? pro. While the ross tech VCDS (new name for vag com) could do it in theory, they don't enable it because it goes beyond diagnostic/normal functions of the dealer tool and into the realm of chip tuning/hacking by changing the eeprom memory. For the same reason, they don't allow you to retrieve secret key code SKC to bypass the dealer when working with the immobilizer.

OR Buy this flash device http://www.ecstuning.com/Search/Window_Remote/ES7204/ It's single use only and is different depending on what control module you have. In some rare cases it does cause failure of the control module.

OR buy this device: http://www.autowindow.com/ It's the safest solution for mk4 vehicles, especially if you don't have a DOS laptop.
