I plan on driving my mine (Golf TDI on order) until it dies or a relative needs a hand me a down.

Ditto. I've been spending 3 years shopping for a new car and I plan to drive it for 200K and/or 15 years.

And the resale value seems to more than make up for the initial cost outlay. Prices I've gotten for used Veedubs I've sold (private party):

Golf (gasoline) with 96K miles: $1,700
Jetta (TDI) with 167K miles: $4,900

Would you elaborate on model years and year sold on those?
