How long do you intend to keep your TDI?

I see posts on how a TDI lasts forever but it doesn't matter if you sell the car by 100,000 miles. In that time you've paid the premium for the diesel engine but have you gotten that value back?

Or is it not about the value?

It's a combination of value and usable torque. Don't forget the higher resale.
Cars depreciate. It's just that the TDI depreciates less and uses less fuel than other cars. And they have decent power for the economy. IMHO, you'd have to pay me just to drive a Corolla so the question is moot.
Or do like I did, buy it at a Cadillac Dealership for the price of a regular Passat. :nana2:
I plan on driving my mine (Golf TDI on order) until it dies or a relative needs a hand me a down.
10 years

Same here, I'm going to drive mine until my son goes to college in 10 years, then he'll get it.

Ditto. I've been spending 3 years shopping for a new car and I plan to drive it for 200K and/or 15 years.

And the resale value seems to more than make up for the initial cost outlay. Prices I've gotten for used Veedubs I've sold (private party):

Golf (gasoline) with 96K miles: $1,700
Jetta (TDI) with 167K miles: $4,900

Would you elaborate on model years and year sold on those?

Til it dies or til I die, whichever comes first.

Dang, 200K is only about 8 years for me -- my last car is only 2 years old, already has over 50K.

I'm waiting for my ordered A3 TDI now, due in late February, early March. With the better fuel economy, higher torque, I'll probably drive it even more.
Hello all. 1st noob post
My intentions are to keep it till the car dies or I die.
My last car I had lasted 18years, and all ihad to do to it was general maintenance and service. I expect to get the same out of this car also.

This is key. You can't neglect maintenance on these cars. They've had some common problems like dead MAFs and some DSG owners aren't happy but generally speaking people keep buying VWs for some reason:thumbsup
45k/yr? Travelling salesman?
Yes. About 1000/week on average. 2010 A3 purchased 11-23-2009. Currently has just over 12k miles. I'm not a traveling salesman...thats my daily commute. I work in L.A. and live in the central valley. I over see regional store operations for a Socal paint company. Closest store is 89 miles one way. Furthest is Santa Barbara at around 160 one way.

Lots of seat time........

Peace.
anyone have long tern experience with the DSG transmission? this seems to be the weakest point in an otherwise bulletproof car.

Greetings from a longtime troller.

I intended to keep mine a long time. I have an '81 cabrio and '83 GTI that I bought new in my garage, so I didn't think it would be hard to eventually hand our JSW down to my kids. VWoA bought it back with 2200 miles on it after the mechatronics unit and clutchpack failed as my daughter pulled out to pass a semi on a college scouting trip.

Maybe it was cursed as I'd never bought a two-pedal car.

I'm taking delivery of a 2010 Golf TDI soon (wish I had a firm date) as to paying off the premium for the diesel, I've already done it with the 1700 Fed tax credit, and the $0 state (CT) sales tax incentive. Total tax savings $3200! Of course I couldn't get a basic unit like I could with the gas Golf, nor could I negotiate anything...

And it's not just about cost vs. savings, IMHO the TDI engine is what makes the car.
My wife says, "Alright, get what you want ... but this time you have to keep it for at least 10 years." So .... I'll be keepinig it for ten years. Which for me will be around 150,000 miles. I figure it is a $500/yr. savings for me versus a 27 ave. MPG GTI, so it's worth the premium price.
